Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) is a form of high-value payments settled individually and immediately through a central bank.
Each transaction is processed in real-time and on a gross basis, meaning payments are not bundled or delayed but settled and cleared 1-to-1, and are irrevocable.
RTGS is used for large, time-sensitive transfers between banks and financial institutions. Its high-speed payment structure reduces risk for critical, high-value payments by limiting the possibility of a party failing to meet its obligations and having a smaller window for cyber threats. These payments are initiated directly by the participating institutions and settled across their accounts.
